Meet the team: Charley Shamaly

Charley is BlueConduit’s VP of Engineering. Get to know Charley through this quick Q&A:

Why did you join BlueConduit?

My passion for innovative technology and commitment to making a positive impact was ultimately what drove me to join BlueConduit. Their mission to provide cutting-edge solutions for public health and safety resonated deeply with my professional values. The way they focus on leveraging data and technology to solve real-world problems, especially in underserved communities, is both inspiring and aligned with my goal of driving meaningful change through technology. I’m also looking to grow and contribute my expertise in software engineering leadership, and BlueConduit’s environment and awesome team are ideal for me.

What professional experience and expertise do you bring to BlueConduit?

I bring a wealth of professional experience and expertise to BlueConduit in the areas of software engineering and technology leadership. Over the past 20 years, I’ve led high-performing engineering teams and delivered numerous successful product initiatives in highly regulated spaces including infrastructure, healthcare, and finance. My background encompasses designing and implementing scalable software solutions, growing contextually aware teams, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.

In my previous roles, I’ve been instrumental in developing problem-solving software products and platforms that not only meet strategic business objectives but also address pressing real-world challenges. My goal is to leverage cutting-edge technologies with my strong project management skills, to help foster BlueConduit’s mission of enhancing public health and safety through data-driven solutions.

However, action in a vacuum is of limited value: ensuring a continuously collaborative approach and communicating complex technical concepts to a wide array of stakeholders will be valuable in aligning BlueConduit’s technological advancements with its overall strategic goals. I’m excited to bring my expertise to this dynamic team and help drive the next phase of growth and impact for BlueConduit!

What does a day in the life of BlueConduit’s VP of Engineering look like?

A day in the life of BlueConduit’s VP of Engineering is dynamic and fulfilling, marked by a melange of strategic planning, team collaboration, and hands-on technical work. My first focus here will be understanding what we’re aiming to build and creating a team to help in realizing BlueConduit’s vision.

Once the team is up and going, throughout the day, I’ll zero in on both immediate and long-term goals. This involves reviewing code, providing technical guidance, and ensuring that our software solutions align with the company’s goals. This includes regular discussion with software engineering team members individually and as a team to foster healthy discussion, debate, and a sharing of ideas.

I spend a significant amount of time coordinating with other departments, such as product management, data science, and customer success, to ensure seamless integration and delivery of our products and platforms. I also engage in strategic discussions with the leadership team to plan future initiatives, allocate talent, and drive innovation within the company. Mentoring and supporting my team members is another critical part of my role, as I want to foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

To close out my day, I review our progress, identify areas for improvement, and prepare for the next steps to ensure we stay on track with our goals. It’s a role that demands both technical expertise and strong leadership, making every day both challenging and rewarding.

What work accomplishments are you most proud of and what goals have you prioritized for this year?

The people, it’s always the people. I’m so honored and proud of the teams I’ve worked with and the goals we’ve accomplished together. Looking forward to next year, I’ll look to create an engineering team to create and deliver the initial BlueConduit Decision Analytics platform in a way that fosters BlueConduit’s continued success.

How do you spend your time outside of work?

I spend a lot of time renovating my house! I absolutely love design and seeing ideas become real (which is probably why I fell in love with software!). I do this in the company of my floppy eared canine pal, Newton, and less floppy eared partner. When I’m not tearing down a wall or installing a window, you’ll find me playing dodgeball, reading an absurd book, or volunteering within the Cleveland community, where I live.
